EACOP project reaches 60% completion

The implementation of a major cross-border East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) involving the construction of a 1,443-kilometre from Uganda’s oil fields in Hoima to Chongoleani in Tanga, Tanzania, has reached 60% completion. 

This was revealed on 02.06.2025, when EWURA Board of Directors inspected the project at Chongoleani, Tanga Region. 

Speaking on behalf of the Board’s Chairman, the Chairperson of the Energy Committee, Eng. Ngosi Mwihava expressed the board's satisfaction over the project progress.

He emphasized EWURA’s role in overseeing the project copled with ensuring that Tanzanians secure meaningfully benefits from its execution through employment opportunities, skills and technology transfer, as well as access to business opportunities related to the provision of goods and services.

Providing further insight, the EACOP’s Director of Human Resources and Corporate Services, Mr. Geoffrey Mponda said that the project has so far employed over 6,000 people. Of which, approximately 70% are residents surrounding the project, reflecting its positive impact on local content.

Earlier, the Board had paid a courtesy visit to the Tanga Regional Commissioner, Hon. Amb. Dr. Batilda Salha Burian, who affirmed the project’s substantial contribution to regional development.

She noted that a number of local service providers and suppliers have registered in the EWURA’s LSSP managed database, creating new economic opportunities for residents.

The Government of Tanzania holds a 15% stake in the EACOP project through the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC).
