EWURA Board visits CNG infrastructure in Dar Es Salaam

Dar es Salaam – Board of Directors of the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), on 31.05.2025 conducted a visit to the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure located in Dar es Salaam, with the aim of gaining insight into the development of the country’s natural gas sub-sector.

The visit included stops at Rafiki and Tembo CNG stations located in Tabata ToT, as well as TAQA Dalbit station along Sam Nujoma Road. The Board also visited the offices of Shields Engineering and Safety Solutions, a company responsible for certifying CNG infrastructure, located in the Ubungo Maziwa area.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of the Board’s Energy Committee, Eng. Ngosi Mwihava, stated that the purpose of the visit was to gain a deeper understanding of the activities undertaken by various stakeholders in the natural gas sector, in order to strengthen regulatory oversight and address existing challenges.

“In the natural gas value chain particularly at the utilization level, there are many stakeholders involved in different activities. Some of these activities are regulated by EWURA. To regulate them effectively, we need to understand in detail how these operations are carried out and the challenges being faced, so we can find practical solutions,” said Eng. Mwihava.

To date, there are a total of nine (9) CNG stations in the country, two of which are used for private consumption at the Dangote Cement Factory.

Compressed natural gas in Tanzania is primarily used to power vehicles, run industrial operations, and for cooking such as in Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam. Furthermore, the number of vehicles running on natural gas has reached 15,000, a figure that continues to grow as infrastructure and public awareness improve.
